Re.pose \ri-ˈpōz\ The act of resting or the state of being at rest. Freedom from worry; peace of mind. Calmness; tranquility.

Repose is both fleeting and hard to come by in this productivity-obsessed age. There is no question that the frenetic pace of life can lead to stress, which in turn contributes to ill health and disease. Although we continue to place tremendous value on being ‘busy’ and constantly connected, we are increasingly searching for ways to carve out time in our daily lives for rest, relaxation, peace – or simply put ‘repose’.

Countless people have experienced the healing benefits of yoga for centuries. Now, modern science is confirming what ancient wisdom has long taught us: yoga and other mind-body techniques have a tremendously positive impact on our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual health.

Our goal at Repose Yoga Toronto is to improve health and well-being through the teaching of simple and accessible mind-body techniques in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment. Mind-body balance looks and feels different for everyone. Ultimately, we want to empower people to choose those techniques that resonate with them, and integrate them into their daily lives (and personal practices).

We at Repose Yoga Toronto are committed to sharing these healing practices, especially with people experiencing anxiety, stress, and trauma. Recent research findings indicate that yoga can modulate the body’s stress response system, increase heart rate variability (a measurement of how well the body responds to stress), and decrease post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Mindfulness-based practices have been found to reduce stress, minimize anxiety, and prevent relapse of depression.*

Repose Yoga is committed to accessibility: we strive to bring the healing practices of yoga and other mind-body techniques to people from all walks of life. We acknowledge that individuals and groups experiencing mental illness and trauma may be especially common in institutional settings, such as health care and correctional facilities. Therefore, we work carefully to provide techniques that will be suitable and effective within and beyond various institutional settings.

Repose Yoga Toronto aims to contribute to the growing efforts to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness. We wish to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of mental health issues in our communities. Moreover, we hope to support individuals by providing simple and empowering tools for managing anxiety, stress, and trauma.

We all deserve some repose.

*There are many possible paths to healing and transformation. As such, Repose Yoga Toronto encourages people to explore mind-body techniques as an adjunct to, and not a replacement for, other treatment modalities one may be engaged in. Speak to your health and support team about how Repose Yoga Toronto may complement your other methods for achieving wellness.

Yoga has its roots in Indian thought, but its content is universal because it is about the means by which we can make the changes we desire in our lives”  - T.K.V. Desikachar, The Heart of Yoga
